Large Tourmaline (Indicolite), Quartz, with Cleavelandite
Stewart Mine, Pala District, San Diego County, CA
11.9 cm x 9.3 cm x 7.4 cm

Here is a great specimen from the Stewart Mine. Although the mine is more well known for its screaming pink tourmaline, it has produced some surprises over the years.
The specimen is host to three large tourmaline crystals in blue bladed cleavelandite and surrounded by smoky colored quartz.Although at first look the tourmaline looks transparent shades of green, once a light is applied or taken out into the sunlight, the crystals reveal their true blue coloring in parts of the crystals. The largest of the three crystals is still partially covered in quartz, but the exposed head measures 3.8 cm across, and there is still more under the quartz. The three tourmaline crystal show the same coloring when exposed to light. There is some contact to the quartz crystals and the top termination edges of the tourmaline crystals are dinged up along the edges, but really does not take away from the over all look of the specimen. It is a hard one to photograph because of the placement of the crystals, so I have taken many and hopefully the video will also upload.

Overall a pretty impressive specimen from the Stewart Mine.
